What is SFMA?

By: Rebecca Moore |

You spent years in school learning how the body moves and why. You know each muscle, tendon, joint and bone associated with movement; and by now you know that symptom-based movement assessments just don’t cut it when attempting to reach a diagnosis. So how are you supposed to enhance everything you know and take your clinical assessment skills to the next level?

The Selective Functional Movement Assessment

Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a movement assessment approach designed to help you better assess, prevent and correct musculoskeletal dysfunction.

“SFMA focuses on finding the root and cause of symptoms by breaking down dysfunctional patterns logically rather than simply finding the source of the pain.,” said the experts from Advances in Clinical Education. “When the clinical assessment is initiated from the perspective of a movement pattern, the clinician has the opportunity to identify meaningful impairments that may be seemingly unrelated to the main musculoskeletal complaint, but contributes to the associated disability.”

Learning SFMA means you’ll be heading back to basics and learning new methods to treat pain and movement dysfunctions. This includes:

  • Learning the seven standard evaluation components to a Selective Functional Movement Assessment and how to identify dysfunction
  • Building therapeutic treatment programs composed of the latest in manual therapy and functional exercise
  • Learning how to safely progress your patients throughout the entirety of their rehabilitation
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of your assessment through careful monitoring of progress

Dr. Michael Voight, the lead instructor of the Advances in Clinical Education SFMA course, has spent years teaching health care provides the importance of the Selective Functional Movement Assessment. Hear what he has to say about the methodology below, and sign up for one of his courses today:
