The Rewards and Challenges of Being an Athletic Trainer

Every March, National Athletic Training Month serves as a medium to spread awareness about the important value athletic trainers bring to the world of sports medicine. With a motto of “Your protection is our priority” for the 2017 celebration, it’s easy to understand what takes precedence in the everyday life of an athletic trainer; enforcing safety and peak physical and mental health of every athlete they come in contact with.

The rewards and challenges that athletic trainers face

Just like any job, there are many up-sides to being a part of the athletic training field, although the industry faces a good number of trials. For Athletic Training month, we caught up with our Cramer Advisory Council, an elite team of athletic trainers from every level across the country. Each member had an insight into the highs and low of their profession and how it impacts their daily performance. If you’re thinking of entering the athletic training field, consider these current implications:

The rewards:

  • Helping athletes maintain performance or return to the sport they love
  • Camaraderie with both the athletes, coaches and fellow athletic trainers
  • Building relationships and trust with the athletes
  • Being a huge impact to students during an important time in their lives

The challenges:

  • The busy nature of the profession can sometimes cause a lack of life balance
  • Athletics is growing, but the funding and staffing of athletic trainers is not keeping pace with this progress
  • Athletic trainers have a lot of responsibility, but sometimes not a lot of authority without the coaches’ support
  • Athletes looking for passive treatment expect athletic trainers to cater to them without investing in their own rehab and wellness experience

Hear the members of the Advisory Council touch on these subjects and more in the videos below; and stay tuned for more National Athletic Training Month celebrations throughout the month of March!
