TheraBand Exercise: Neck and Back


Fredin K et al. Manual therapy, exercise therapy or combined treatment in the management of adult neck pain – A systematic review and meta-analysis. Musculoskelet Sci Pract. 2017 Oct;31:62-71.

This meta-analysis (including studies utilizing elastic resistance) found no additional benefit of manual therapy when added to exercise therapy for mild neck pain

Ilves O, et al. Effectiveness of postoperative home-exercise compared with usual care on kinesiophobia and physical activity in spondylolisthesis: A randomized controlled trial. J Rehabil Med. 2017. 49(9):751-7.

A 12-month exercise program including TheraBand resistance bands was not more effective than usual care at improving kinesiophobia or physical activity levels in post-operative spinal fusion patients with spondylolisthesis.

Iversen VM et al. Resistance training in addition to multidisciplinary rehabilitation for patients with chronic pain in the low back: Study protocol. 2017. Contemporary Clinical Trials Communications6:115-121

This is a protocol for a large randomized controlled trial using TheraBand for moderate to severe lower back pain

Madsen BK, et al. Efficacy of strength training on tension-type headache: A randomised controlled study. Cephalalgia. 2017. [Epub ahead of print]

In this randomized controlled trial, the authors found ergonomic and posture correction was more effective at reducing tension-type headache frequency and intensity compared to 10 weeks of strength training using TheraBand elastic bands; however, there was no statistical significance between groups. Therefore, the authors recommended both interventions be implemented together.

Boucher JA, et al. The effects of an 8-week stabilization exercise program on lumbar movement sense in patients with low back pain. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2016 Jan 14;17:23.

An 8-week stabilization exercise program including TheraBand, stability discs, and exercise balls in low back pain patients reduced pain and disability, but did not change lumbar muscle activation or kinematics.

Alfredo PP, et al. Long-term results of a randomized, controlled, double-blind study of low-level laser therapy before exercises in knee osteoarthritis: laser and exercises in knee osteoarthritis. Clin Rehabil. 2017 Aug 1:269215517723162.[Epub ahead of print]

This follow up analysis found that the benefits of low-laser therapy combined with an exercise program including balance boards remained after 6 months.

Bieler T et al. In hip osteoarthritis, Nordic Walking is superior to strength training and home-based exercise for improving function. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2017 Aug;27(8):873-886.

In a randomized controlled trial of hip osteoarthritis patients, Nordic walking was found to be better than strength training (including bands) over 12 months in function, physical activity, and mental health.

Clausen et al. An 8-Week Neuromuscular Exercise Program for Patients With Mild to Moderate Knee Osteoarthritis: A Case Series Drawn From a Registered Clinical Trial. J Athl Train. 2017 Jun 2;52(6):592-605.

This case series describes the feasibility of an 8 week neuromuscular exercise program including elastic resistance and exercise balls for patients with mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis.

Drew BT, et al. The effect of targeted treatment on people with patellofemoral pain: a pragmatic, randomised controlled feasibility study. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2017 Aug 4;18(1):338.

The authors report on the feasibility of an 8-week randomized controlled trial comparing usual care to hip strengthening (including elastic tubing) in females with anterior knee pain

Kobsar D, et al. Wearable sensors to predict improvement following an exercise intervention in patients with knee osteoarthritis. J Neuroeng Rehabil. 2017 Sep 12;14(1):94.

Researchers found that using accelerometers on lower extremities during a 6-week TheraBand hip strengthening exercise program with TheraBand resistance could predict improvement in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Minshull C, Gleeson N. Considerations of the Principles of Resistance Training in Exercise Studies for the Management of Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2017 Sep;98(9):1842-1851

This systematic review of randomized controlled trials on resistance training interventions in knee osteoarthritis (including 7 using elastic resistance) found reporting of the exercise prescription may limit the ability of clinicians to interpret findings, noting reporting deficits in exercise prescription and patient adherence.

Riel H, et al. Feedback Leads to Better Exercise Quality in Adolescents with Patellofemoral Pain. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2017 Aug 25. [Epub ahead of print]

Feedback provided with the BandcizerTM device during a 6-week exercise program with TheraBand resistance in adolescents with patellofemoral pain resulted in significantly better adherence and strength.

Reijen M et al. Preventing recurrent ankle sprains: Is the use of an App more cost-effective than a printed Booklet? Results of a RCT. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2017 May 19.

An 8-week neuromuscular training was as effective at reducing re-injury rates in athletes with previous ankle sprains, whether delivered via booklet or an app, at equivalent costs.

The author describes exercises for CMC joint stability exercises.

Andersen L et al. Validity and reliability of elastic resistance bands for measuring shoulder muscle strength. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2017 Aug;27(8):887-894.

Researchers found TheraBand elastic resistance is highly valid and reliable at measuring shoulder abduction strength in healthy subjects (Supported with TheraBand products)

Choi WJ et al. Different weight bearing push-up plus exercises with and without isometric horizontal abduction in subjects with scapular winging: A randomized trial. J Bodyw Mov Ther. 2017 Jul;21(3):582-588.

Adding isometric shoulder horizontal abduction during pushups using TheraBand looped around the forearms reduces pectoralis minor activation and improves scapular muscle balance in subjects with scapular winging.

Johnson M et al. Rehabilitation Following Surgery for Glenohumeral Instability. Sports Med Arthrosc. 2017 Sep;25(3):116-122

This review article provides suggestions for rehabilitation after shoulder instability surgery.

Kvalvaag E, et al. Effectiveness of Radial Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (rESWT) When Combined With Supervised Exercises in Patients With Subacromial Shoulder Pain: A Double-Masked, Randomized, Sham-Controlled Trial. Am J Sports Med. 2017 Sep;45(11):2547-2554.

In this randomized, controlled trial, adding shock-wave therapy to 24 weeks of supervised exercise including elastic resistance does not provide additional benefit to shoulder impingement rehabilitation.

Tejera-Falcón E, et al. Dry needling in a manual physiotherapy and therapeutic exercise protocol for patients with chronic mechanical shoulder pain of unspecific origin: a protocol for a randomized control trial. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2017 Sep 18;18(1):400.

This protocol including exercise with TheraBand resistance and exercise balls for a randomized controlled trial combines exercise with dry needling on patients with chronic mechanical shoulder pain.

Turgut E, et al. Effects of Scapular Stabilization Exercise Training on Scapular Kinematics, Disability, and Pain in Subacromial Impingement: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2017 Oct;98(10):1915-1923.

In this randomized controlled trial, 30 patients with shoulder impingement completed 12 weeks of TheraBand exercise training; half of the subjects performed additional kinetic chain scapular exercises, which provided additional improvements in pain and disability.

Cochrane D et al. Does short-term gluteal activation enhance muscle performance? Res Sports Med. 2017 Apr-Jun;25(2):156-165.

A 6-week gluteal activation exercise program including “monster walks” with TheraBand resistance did not affect EMG or hip extension strength in male rugby players.

Foley RCA, et al. Effects of a band loop on lower extremity muscle activity and kinematics during the barbell squat. Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2017 Aug;12(4):550-559.

Using a TheraBand loop around the distal thighs during a barbell squat increases muscle activation without changing kinematics in trained and untrained male subjects.

Kuhns BD, et al. A four-phase physical therapy regimen for returning athletes to sport following hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement with routine capsular closure. Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2017 Aug;12(4):683-696.

The authors describe a rehabilitation progression for hip arthroscopy, including the use of elastic resistance.

Lesinski M, et al. Effects of drop height and surface instability on neuromuscular activation during drop jumps. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2017 Oct;27(10):1090-1098.

Researchers investigated effects on muscle activation of leg muscles on and off of foam surfaces at different drop jump heights, finding minimal differences between conditions.

Gouttebarge V, et al. Preventing musculoskeletal injuries among recreational adult volleyball players: design of a randomised prospective controlled trial. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2017 Aug 2;18(1):333.

This is a protocol for a randomized controlled study including TheraBand to prevent musculoskeletal injuries in adult volley players.

Mendiguchia J et al. A Multifactorial, Criteria-based Progressive Algorithm for Hamstring Injury Treatment. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2017 Jul;49(7):1482-1492.

In this randomized controlled trial for soccer players after hamstring injury, a longer, comprehensive treatment program including elastic resistance and exercise balls was more effective at reducing reinjury and improving speed than a standard, shorter rehab process.

The authors report on the effectiveness of an exercise program including elastic bands and exercise balls on performance and injuries in college bowlers.

Passigli S, et al. The effects of a multimodal rehabilitation program on pain, kinesiophobia and function in a runner with patellofemoral pain. Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2017 Aug;12(4):670-682.

This case report describes a rehabilitation for a runner with knee pain, including elastic resistance.

This review article recommends therapeutic knee taping and elastic-resisted hip exercises for anterior knee pain in athletes.

In this study, female volleyball players (but not male) had impaired jump landing biomechanics after fatigue, particularly on foam surfaces

A rehabilitation program of athletes with hamstring strains was shown to reduce re-injury rates.

Xie Y et al. The Efficacy of Dynamic Contract-Relax Stretching on Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness Among Healthy Individuals: A Randomized Clinical Trial. Clin J Sport Med. 2017 Jul 21. [Epub ahead of print]

Contract-relax stretching using the TheraBand stretch strap was not effective at reducing symptoms of DOMS in the calf muscle of healthy subjects

A 15-month exercise program using elastic bands for nursing home residents with dementia resulted in significant improvements in depression and behavior compared to a control group.

Chupel MU, et al. Strength Training Decreases Inflammation and Increases Cognition and Physical Fitness in Older Women with Cognitive Impairment. Front Physiol. 2017 Jun 12;8:377.

A 28 week exercise program using TheraBand resistance bands improved cognition and physical fitness, and decreased inflammation in older women with cognitive impairment.

Fournier D et al. Outcomes of Exercise Training Following the Use of a Birthing Ball During Pregnancy and Delivery. J Strength Cond Res. 2017 Jul;31(7):1941-1947.

Participation in a pre-partum class using an exercise ball was associated with better labor and delivery.

Gruther W et al. Can Early Rehabilitation on the General Ward After an Intensive Care Unit Stay Reduce Hospital Length of Stay in Survivors of Critical Illness?: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Am J Phys Med Rehabil. 2017 Sep;96(9):607-615.

In this randomized controlled trial, the authors reported that an early rehabilitation program (including elastic resistance exercises) after discharge from ICU resulted in a safe and effective, earlier discharge from the hospital compared to usual care, as well as improved functional recovery.

Hageman P, et al. Web-Based Interventions Alone or Supplemented with Peer-Led Support or Professional Email Counseling for Weight Loss and Weight Maintenance in Women from Rural Communities: Results of a Clinical Trial. J Obes. 2017;2017:1602627.

A web-based intervention including TheraBand resistance assisted rural community women in achieving 6-month weight loss, although half regain weight at 30 months.

Katzman W et al. Targeted spine strengthening exercise and posture training program to reduce hyperkyphosis in older adults: results from the study of hyperkyphosis, exercise, and function (SHEAF) randomized controlled trial. Osteoporos Int. 2017 Jul 8.

A 6 month exercise program including TheraBand resistance improved posture in older adults with hyperkyphosis.

Langan J, et al. Reported use of technology in stroke rehabilitation by physical and occupational therapists. Disabil Rehabil Assist Technol. 2017 Aug 16:1-7. [Epub ahead of print]

This survey of PTs and OTs revealed that the use of technology is not common in stroke rehabilitation; however, 74% reported giving patients Theraband and theraputty for home programs.

Marconcin P et al. A randomized controlled trial of a combined self-management and exercise intervention for elderly people with osteoarthritis of the knee: the PLE2NO program. Clin Rehabil. 2017 Jul 1

This randomized, controlled trial of a12-week self-management program including elastic resistance exercises significantly improved strength and aerobic capacity in knee osteoarthritis patients, as well as non-significant reductions in pain (31%).

Moya-Nájera D, et al. Combined resistance and endurance training at a moderate-to-high intensity improves physical condition and quality of life in liver transplant patients. Liver Transpl. 2017 Oct;23(10):1273-1281.

The authors reported significant outcomes in aerobic capacity, strength, and function in liver transplants after a 24 week TheraBand exercise program compared to a control group.

These studies examined the success of a diabetes education program in Canada that featured TheraBand latex-free bands as a key component in managing diabetes.

This article recommends a resistance training program including elastic resistance for persons with HIV/AIDS

Sebio García R et al. Preoperative exercise training prevents functional decline after lung resection surgery: a randomized, single-blind controlled trial. Clin Rehabil. 2017 Aug;31(8):1057-1067.

In lung cancer surgery patients, a prehab exercise program including TheraBand resistance significantly increases exercise capacity and strength compared to a control group of patients.

Swartz M et al. Effect of Home- and Community-Based Physical Activity Interventions on Physical Function Among Cancer Survivors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 2017 Aug;98(8):1652-1665.

In this meta-analysis including interventions using elastic resistance, both home- and community-based exercise interventions improve function in cancer survivors

Rezvani M. Comparing Pilates and physioball exercise regimens on balance and motor control in women with multiple sclerosis. Int J Health Studies. 2017. 3(2):5-9.

8 weeks of training using Pilates exercises or exercise balls improved balance and motor control in multiple sclerosis patients.

Rooijen S et al. Systematic review of exercise training in colorectal cancer patients during treatment. Scand J Med Sci Sports. 2017 May 10. 1-11.

This systematic review of 7 studies (2 including TheraBand resistance) on exercise in colorectal cancer patients found strength training effects low for upper extremity and moderate for lower extremity, although there is limited evidence.

Vanbellingen T, et al. Home based training for dexterity in Parkinson’s disease: A randomized controlled trial. Parkinsonism Relat Disord. 2017 Aug;41:92-98.

Researchers compared 4 weeks of dexterity-specific exercises including putty to a 6- exercise TheraBand elbow & wrist strengthening program in a randomized trial of Parkinson’s disease patients. The dexterity group significantly improved in their dexterity measures compared to the TheraBand group; both groups significantly improved their quality of life.

Wiesmeier IK, et al. Balance Training Enhances Vestibular Function and Reduces Overactive Proprioceptive Feedback in Elderly. Front Aging Neurosci. 2017 Aug 11;9:273.

A 10-week balance training program for older adults including foam mats resulted in improved vestibular function. The authors noted a 10-year ‘rejuvenation’ of the subjects balance.

 Kinesiology Taping and Therapeutic Taping 


Boobphachart D et al. Effects of elastic taping, non-elastic taping and static stretching on recovery after intensive eccentric exercise. Res Sports Med. 2017 Apr-Jun;25(2):181-190.

Kinesiology tape applied to quadriceps after DOMS improved muscle strength and soreness compared to placebo tape and stretching, but no effect on ROM or performance.

Castrogiovanni  P et al. The Effects of Exercise and Kinesio Tape on Physical Limitations in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis. J Funct Morphol Kinesiol. 2016. 1(4): 355-368

3 months of kinesiology tape application combined with exercise resulted in improved mobility and disability, as well as more pain reduction and less pain medication consumption than exercise alone in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Chang NJ, et al. Acute effects of Kinesio taping on pain, disability and back extensor muscle endurance in patients with low back pain caused by magnetic resonance imaging-confirmed lumbar disc degeneration. J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil. 2017 [Epub ahead of print]

Kinesiology tape reduced pain (but not clinically significantly) in patients with lower back pain resulting from degenerative disc disease, although there was no randomization or control group; furthermore, disability and muscle endurance are not improved after 1 day of tape.

Dingenen B et al. Effect of taping on multi-segmental foot kinematic patterns during walking in persons with chronic ankle instability. J Sci Med Sport. 2017 Sep;20(9):835-840.

A biomechanical evaluation of patients with chronic ankle instability found increased forefoot inversion with the low-dye taping of the foot; therefore, avoid this technique in this population.

Farquharson C et al. Kinesiology tape mediates soccer-simulated and local peroneal fatigue in soccer players. Res Sports Med. 2017 Jul-Sep;25(3):313-321.

Kinesiology tape and athletic tape applied to the ankles of soccer players reduced balance instability after 45 minutes of “simulated” soccer, while kinesiology tape also reduced balance instability following isolated personal fatigue.

This paper outlines a protocol for a systematic review of kinesiology taping in rotator cuff patients.

Gloria D et al. Kinesio taping does not alter muscle torque, muscle activity or jumping performance in professional soccer players: A randomized, placebo-controlled, blind, clinical trial. J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil. 2017 Mar 3.

Kinesiology tape applied to the quadriceps did not change muscle strength, EMG, or jump performance in soccer players.

Homayouni K, et al. Effects of kinesiotaping versus non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy for treatment of pes anserinus tendino-bursitis: A randomized comparative clinical trial. Phys Sportsmed. 2016 Sep;44(3):252-6.

In this randomized, non-controlled trial, the researchers reported larger effects for kinesiology tape application for pain and swelling in pes anserine bursitis over 3 weeks compared to oral NSAIDS and “physical therapy” for 10 days.

Keles B et al. Kinesio Taping in patients with lumbar disc herniation: A randomised, controlled, double-blind study. J Back Musculoskelet Rehabil. 2017;30(3):543-550.

Applying kinesiology tape once per week for 3 weeks improved pain, ROM, quality of life, and disability compared to “placebo” tape. In addition, the kinesiology tape required less pain medication at 3 month follow-up.

Kim E et al. Effects of kinesio taping to the quadriceps femoris muscles on functions of elderly women. J Phys Ther Sci. 2017 Jul;29(7):1205-1207.

Kinesiology tape applied 3 times per week to the quadriceps of older women with knee osteoarthritis plus and exercise program had better function after 4 weeks than an exercise group without kinesiology tape; however, there was no placebo group.

Logan CA, et al. Systematic Review of the Effect of Taping Techniques on Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome. Sports Health. 2017 Sep/Oct;9(5):456-461.

This systematic review of taping (including both rigid and kinesiology taping) on patellofemoral pain found taping is an effective adjunct for therapy, but should not be used in isolation.

Kinesiology tape applied to the lower extremity of basketball players has no effect on vertical jump biomechanics.

Matheus JP, et al. Comparison of the mechanical properties of therapeutic elastic tapes used in sports and clinical practice. Phys Ther Sport. 2017 Mar;24:74-78.

This study compared the mechanical properties of several brands of kinesiology tape, evaluating tensile strength.

Mohamadi M, et al. Friction massage versus kinesiotaping for short-term management of latent trigger points in the upper trapezius: a randomized controlled trial. Chiropr Man Therap. 2017 Sep 12;25:25.

In this randomized controlled trial, cross friction massage or kinesiology tape did not improve upper trapezius trigger point pain or grip strength after 3 days.

Pekyavas NO, Baltaci G. Short-term effects of high-intensity laser therapy, manual therapy, and Kinesio taping in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome. Lasers Med Sci. 2016 Aug;31(6):1133-41

Adding high-intensity laser to exercise, manual therapy, and kinesiology tape resulted in better improvements in pain, ROM and disability in patients with shoulder impingement.

Perez M et al. A Multimodal Approach for Myofascial Pain Syndrome: A Prospective Study. J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 2017 Jul – Aug;40(6):397-403.

This pre-post clinical intervention (no control group) for myofascial pain patients including kinesiology tape resulted in clinically relevant reductions in pain in nearly 80% of patients within 4 treatments.

Pourkhani T et al. Effect of Ankle Taping and Fatigue on Dynamic Stability in Athletes With and Without Chronic Ankle Instability [Persian]. Arch Rehabil. 2017. 19(2):110-121.

Fatigue may be a factor in the loss of dynamic stability after ankle taping. While patients with chronic ankle sprain improve their balance after taping, fatigued patients and healthy subjects did not improve dynamic balance after taping.

Preece H, White P. Does kinesiology tape increase trunk forward flexion? J Bodyw Mov Ther. 2017 Jul;21(3):618-625.

Kinesiology tape applied to the lower back of healthy subjects increases forward bending ROM, but is no different than a ‘placebo’ application.

Song CY, et al. Effects of Femoral Rotational Taping on Dynamic Postural Stability in Female Patients With Patellofemoral Pain. Clin J Sport Med. 2017 Sep;27(5):438-443.

Kinesiology tape applied in a rotational pattern around the thigh in females with anterior knee pain resulted in improved balance and less pain during a balance test; however, a control group of healthy participants also improved after placebo taping.

Following distal radius fracture, patients exhibited improved scapular kinematics after kinesiology tape application compared to healthy controls.

In this randomized controlled trial, 66 fibromyalgia patients performed self-myofascial release (including a foam roller) or served as control for 20 weeks. The experimental group had significant improvements in ROM and quality of life.

In this study on lifeguards, lower extremity foam rolling was as effective as running for recovery (clearing blood lactate) after performing a water rescue; both active recoveries were more effective than passive recovery.

Ankle Braces

This study compared lower extremity kinematics while treadmill running with 4 different external ankle supports. The Active Ankle T2 semi-rigid hinged brace limited inversion/eversion ROM the most, while allowing the most sagittal plane movement compared to the ASO Lace-up and Zonas tape. The tape condition significantly influenced knee kinematics, while the braces did not.
