Summary

Researchers investigated the concurrent validity of the TheraBand OMNI Resistance Exercise Scale for perceived exertion in older adults. The OMNI Scale indicates the intensity level based on the perception of the individual performing the exercise, and has been previously validated in other populations (Colado et al. 2012, Colado et al. 2014

26 older adults (over 60 years old) performed 4 exercises (2 upper body and 2 lower body) with TheraBand exercise bands at 3 intensities: high, medium and low. Perceived exertion of the active muscles as well as the overall body were recorded. Applied force and heart rate were measured simultaneously.

The researchers reported that the OMNI Scale for TheraBand was “an appropriate, valid, and useful tool for use in older adult exercise prescription.” Practitioners can use the TheraBand OMNI Scale to provide and progress elastic resistance exercise in younger and older adult.
