How to Get Hours of Long-Lasting DOMS Pain Relief in Less Than An Hour

For years, Biofreeze® topical analgesic has provided relief for patients with musculoskeletal pain included delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which is muscle soreness experienced 24-48 hours after strenuous or unaccustomed exercise. DOMS is caused by inflammation that produces swelling within muscle cells (It’s not the lactic acid, folks!).

TRAC researcher Michael Rogers PhD, CSCS, head of the kinesiology department at Wichita State University, wanted to know how long Biofreeze topical analgesic could reduce DOMS pain. “DOMS is a common problem associated with resistance training,” said Rogers. “The pain and stiffness sometimes prevents an individual from doing their daily activities and may deter someone from continuing their workouts.”

Dr. Rogers and his colleagues induced DOMS of the thighs in nine college students using a high-intensity squat routine. 24 hours after the exercise, the subjects applied Biofreeze or a placebo gel to their quadriceps and rated their DOMS pain every 30 minutes for eight hours.

The subjects using Biofreeze experienced a 20% decrease in pain 60 minutes after application, which was significantly less pain than the placebo group. The pain levels remained significantly lower than the placebo for five hours. In conclusion, Biofreeze provides maximal pain relief from DOMS within one hour, and lasts up to five hours after application.
